The delightful Aram Kim was an attendee at our Crafting Successful Author Visits workshop. She had this to say about her experience:
For many authors and illustrators, being in front of people under the spotlight could be unnerving and even terrifying. Author visits, book launches, book festivals, interviews and video promotions are only some of the countless author activities that require public speaking. I took the Crafting Successful Author Visits workshop at the Highlights Foundation a few months before my second picture book came out in hopes of learning how to reach my audience more effectively. Before I attended, the prospect of a 6-day workshop on public speaking was quite daunting. Even though I was initially hesitant, taking this workshop turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my career.
The lessons in this workshop were both practical and fundamental. They were so useful that I could apply them to my practice right away in a lot of different areas. At the same time, these lessons fundamentally changed my attitude and perspective about how I should approach various book-related events. This workshop skillfully guided participants with its carefully structured lesson plans carried out by faculty who are dedicated and caring masters of their fields. My gratitude toward the deeply devoted faculty members–Peter, Jan and Carmen, cannot be expressed in words.
This workshop covers principles and fundamentals, practical tips and exercises, various business logistics, and anything else one can possibly expect. I don’t believe it is a coincidence that I spoke in public a lot more after I took this workshop. Furthermore, attendees in my group continue to support and help one another up to this day. Even though we write in different genres, such as picture books, middle grade and YA, we all learned and grew during the workshop together and are now a tightly knit group. No matter what a prospective participant expects to learn from this workshop, s/he will learn that and so much more.
Thanks, Aram! If our readers are feeling hungry, they might want to watch this episode of KidLit TV’s StoryMakers in the Kitchen, where they can learn how to make kimchi pancakes with Aram!
