Getting to Your Highlights Foundation Workshop

“I’ve been to numerous conferences and workshops over the years. This workshop was the very best workshop I’ve ever attended. I’m so happy I invested the time, money, and travel to attend—I would do it again.”

“The staff is what consistently continues to impress me. They go above and beyond in everything they do. When I’m there, I don’t have to worry about anything but learning, nurturing my creativity, and writing.”

Welcome to our community! If you’ve never been here before, logistics may seem overwhelming. But we make that part easy, so you can focus on learning and your creative spirit.

1. Decide How You’ll Get Here

Our Retreat Center is located near the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania. It’s worlds away from the grind of daily life, but we make it easy for you to get here.

  • You can drive. Our Retreat Center is located in Milanville, PA (also called Boyds Mills, PA; depends on what map you’re using). We’ll provide maps and directions, and there is ample parking.
  • You can fly, and we’ll pick you up. The closest airport is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AVP). No matter what time of day you fly in, we’ll pick you up and take you back to the airport at the end of your stay. It’s a complimentary service. If a flight into AVP is not possible or is cost-prohibitive, you can fly into Newark (EWR). If your flight arrives at EWR by 2pm, we’ll pick you up and take you back to the airport at the end of your stay for $75 round-trip.
  • You can take a bus, and we’ll pick you up. There is a bus station in Honesdale, PA. It is served by a route from NYC daily. If you get yourself there, we’ll pick you up and take you back to the bus station at the end of your stay. It’s a complimentary service.

Need help finding the right flight for you? Emily from Travel by Lisa lives locally and knows how to find the best flights into Scranton or Newark. (570-352-3187, Emily@travelbylisa.org)

2. Register for the Workshop

Find the workshop you want to register for, and click “Register now.”

Complete the form, giving us information about:

  • Yourself
  • Your dietary preferences (we’ll honor them and you’ll enjoy three deliciously prepared meals per day)
  • Whether you will be adding days to your stay before or after your workshop (not applicable if you’re coming for an Unworkshop only)

You can choose to pay a deposit, or pay the full workshop price on your credit card.

If you choose the deposit option, we’ll secure your spot and then charge the rest 6-8 weeks before the workshop start date. If you would like to set up a different payment plan, email jo.lloyd@highlightsfoundation.org for details.

If you’re choosing a workshop with an application process (this is noted on the workshop description page where applicable), we will not charge your credit card until you have applied to and been accepted into the workshop. You should not make travel arrangements for application-based workshops until you receive confirmation of your acceptance.

If you need to cancel for any reason, the any monies paid can be applied toward a future workshop or Unworkshop stay.

3. Confirm Your Details

Once you are registered, someone from our office will confirm your details and let you know if there are any issues with your choices.

They’ll also contact you to gather information about your travel plans and set your airport/bus shuttle schedule if needed. You can contact jo.lloyd@highlightsfoundation.org at any time for logistics questions.

As it gets closer, you’ll receive more detailed information specific to your workshop/experience as required.

4. Learn and Enjoy

When you arrive, you’ll get to relax, learn and enjoy. And you’ll leave with knowledge, a renewed zest for your craft, and connections to a community of like-minded children’s writers, illustrators, and publishing professionals.

“I’ve been to many conferences and workshops and I teach a workshop every summer but coming to a Highlights workshop has been on my bucket list for years. It even exceeded my high expectations. Hard to put into words but the whole experience was magical. Being in a nurturing bubble, totally immersed in writing was amazing. No newspapers, no TV, no laundry to do or meals to cook, just writing. And learning from amazing mentors. And talking about writing. And writing some more… Bliss.”
