#HFGather Illustrator Chat: Pat Cummings, Shadra Strickland & Sarah Jung on Agents

Jun 5, 2020 | HFGather, Illustration, The Business of Publishing

“You have to live spherically–in many directions. Never lose your childish enthusiasm–and things will come your way.”—Federico Fellini

Shadra Strickland shared this quote during our #HFGather Illustrator Chat, where Pat Cummings talked with Shadra and illustrator Sarah Jung about the agent-illustrator relationship. Some of the things they discussed:

  • Giving/getting illustrator feedback
  • Writing stories to go with your illustrations
  • Illustrators who have a really good sense of storytelling
  • “You must be able to take criticism in order to grow.”–Pat
  • How to go about finding an agent, and the importance of checking their references
  • Even if you have an agent, you need to advocate for yourself
  • Staying dedicated to putting in the work
  • Showing up and pushing your life forward
