#HFGather: Shadra Strickland and Mike Curato Illustrator Chat

Apr 10, 2020 | HFGather, Illustration

On today’s Illustrator #HFGather, host Shadra Strickland and Mike Curato talked about:

  • Career paths: lives lived before working in kidlit
  • How comic books “saved Mike as a reader”
  • Creating a picture book series
  • Mike’s first graphic novel–seeing it as a script
  • Their favorite art supplies
  • What to do when you’re in a creative slump

Mike shared an illustrator challenge: taking two of your favorite characters and combining them into one. He also shared a task (since we might have time on our hands right now): grab a handful of your sketchbooks and go through them, looking for the gold. If you do the challenge, be sure and share it with us @HighlightsFound on Twitter and Instragram, and use #HFGather!
