Weekly Online Course

What is an image system and how can you use one to create your novel in verse? A term originally used in filmmaking, this technique encourages creatives to use setting and time period, the main character’s passions, hobbies, and viewpoints to craft connective and prolonged imagery within a piece of work. This creative tool is especially useful when it comes to novels in verse. Join verse novelist Cordelia Jensen for a four-week online course to establish the image system for your verse novel.

  • Live Lectures (with closed captioning) Wednesdays at 7pm Eastern (April 15, 22, 29, May 6)
  • Weekly Writing exercises April 15 – April 29
  • Access to recordings of each lecture through June 30, 2026
  • Connection with peers in the virtual classroom
  • Weekly informal feedback from your instructor on assignments and open Q & A

“Writing novels-in-verse is such a specific craft. I scoured and searched for workshops and courses and classes on novels in verse, took every one I could find. But once I discovered Cordelia, I knew I hit the novel-in-verse jackpot. She’s a wealth of knowledge which she shares in deep, thorough, but easily understandable lessons and comments and suggestions.”

“I came into the course with very little knowledge about actually writing a verse novel and employing an image system. I left with a world of information.”

“Cordelia Jensen delivers a welcoming, community-based verse novel workshop that’s packed with practical how-to information, inspiring poetry prompts, and supportive feedback.”

“I will forever be grateful to The Highlights Foundation for the scholarship I won for the verse novel writing class with Cordelia Jensen. Her passion for poetry was contagious and her knowledge of the craft, patient guidance and thorough feedback helped me play and explore different forms of poetry with confidence. I highly recommend her classes and critiques, both of which helped me immensely in shaping up Aarzu’s story.”

“Cordelia was a sensitive and smart reader of our work in progress, linking it effectively to the material under study. The class offered an interesting, intelligent and indirect way to think about my novel draft. For me it unlocked the work and allowed me to find the momentum and energy I was seeking.”

“Cordelia was an excellent teacher and shared above and beyond and made the whole class experience worthwhile and informative.”

“Cordelia is a wonderful and kind teacher of verse novels at the fabulous Highlights Foundation, and the perfect instructor for those who are interested in learning more on writing this fast-growing and popular form of writing. From learning about image systems to signing up for her gentle and useful critiques, I benefited greatly from Cordelia, and I encourage aspiring verse novelists to learn all they can from her!”

“Cordelia shared an amazing amount of information. There is so little available on Free Verse and I was thrilled to be part of this class.”

Why This Workshop?
