The Teacher We Sent to Summer Camp Says: It Was Meaningful & Magical

Aug 15, 2025 | Scholarship Stories

High school teacher Jodi Turchin received our Send a Teacher To Summer Camp Scholarship and said appreciatively “I am grateful to all those whose generosity allows for scholarships to be awarded to people like me, for whom attending an in-person workshop is beyond the budget.”

Jodi’s Scholarship Experience:

“Wow. I don’t even know how to put into words how absolutely meaningful and MAGICAL the scholarship experience was. The staff made it very easy to register for the Summer Camp in Writing. From the moment I set foot on campus I felt the energy of all the writers who came before. Everything was wonderful, from the faculty to the food to the lodging (Lodge #1 – a great corner room with a two-window view!) The ability to turn off the responsibilities of reality and engage with fellow writers of all levels was just an amazing experience.”

Takeaways from Camp:

“My biggest takeaways from my Summer Camp experience were from my 1:1 Mentor, Rob Costello, and my peer group led by Alexandra Villasante. Both Rob and Alex, as well as my peers in my group, gave me wonderful feedback to move forward with my work in progress. I also learned a lot from the keynotes and workshops. I loved each author’s sharing of their own lived writing experience and took away great advice for sticking with it when the road is hard and long.”

On Using What She Learned to Inspire Kids:

“I am hoping that my published books (when they happen) will bring kids joy and a love of reading. As a high school teacher, I also want to bring writing tools to my students, and some of the things I learned as a writer I hope to modify in future classes to aid my students in finding a love for the written word, whether they’re reading it OR writing it.”

“There is magic in that sancrosanct place. Thank you for letting me be a part of it this summer.”

Support a Scholarship at the Highlights Foundation

Our Special Scholarships are donor-guided scholarship funds. The creators (donors) of the scholarships help guide decisions about the fund, including the type of program they can be used on and who can be awarded the scholarship.

There are two ways to support our special scholarships:

1) Support an Existing Fund – Does one of our special scholarships already serve a purpose you’d like to support? All our existing scholarship funds accept donations to increase their impact and ensure their longevity.

2) Establish a Special Scholarship – You can also create your own scholarship fund. Here’s how: Options start at $1,500 per year with a minimum commitment of five years. As the fund creator, you can design the scholarship, designate who it supports, and set other criteria. Contact us to discuss options.

In addition to special scholarships, the Highlights Foundation also provides general scholarships.  Supporting our general scholarship fund is another great way to support storytellers here at the Highlights Foundation.
