PB&J: Picture Books and All That Jazz 2014 | June 12 – June 15

Picture books demand strong, creative storytelling and a willingness to dig deep to get the most out of an idea.  Join picture book authors Darcy Pattison and Leslie Helakoski as they guide you through the elements and process of picture book writing.  You’ll work on:

  • Word choices
  • Story structure
  • Pacing
  • Addressing  different audiences
  • And, the possibilities—and pitfalls—of rhythm and rhyme.

During this intensive workshop, you’ll delve into the components of picture books (character, setting, and plot); analyze successful picture books and discover what makes them work; learn how to dummy a story; and get in tune with picture book language and the verbal music it creates. You will focus and shape even vague ideas into lively stories with great illustration possibilities and interactive read-aloud fun.

Visiting editor Stephanie Pitts from Schwartz & Wade Books/Random House and celebrated author/illustrator Henry Cole will also be joining in for an all inclusive intensive weekend of writing, dining, sharing, and creating.
