Perfecting the Picture Book Text 2016 | October 5 – October 9, 2016

Picture books are incredibly fun to create. They are a whole world unto themselves with character, setting, conflict, and structure that provide young readers with a complete story within the span of about 32 pages. But the simplicity of a picture book is often hard won in the writing and editing process. The marriage between text and pictures must begin even before the text is complete. How can we see a story in pictures in order to collaborate with an illustrator we have never met? Golden Kite winner Kristy Dempsey (A Dance Like Starlight, Me With You, Surfer Chick, and the forthcoming Superhero Instruction Manual) and National Book Award-winner Kathryn Erskine (Mockingbird, Mama Africa) will give you the tools you need to write your first-ever picture book or to perfect the picture books you’ve already written. Expect to meet a few surprise guests (and experienced picture book creators) via Skype as well!

Key concepts will include:

  • Different genres of picture books (baby books, preschool, elementary)
  • Language use and word play
  • Story structure
  • Setting and character development
  • Visual writing techniques
  • Voice
  • Endings
  • Emotional resonance
