Building a Novel: Scene, Summary, and Sentence 2013 | October 31 – November 3, 2013

The basic building block of the novel is the dramatic scene. This workshop will offer strategies for improving your manuscript by exploring what makes a scene in a novel, how scene and summary serve the overall narrative arc, and how scenes build toward a dramatic climax. Additionally, the workshop will offer you a chance to revise the overall arc of your story, using the pacing of scene and summary, as well as consider revision and rewriting on the sentence (and word) level of the text. You will leave with a better understanding of how to build a novel and how to revise through the layers of word, sentence, summary, and scene.

Participants will ideally have a completed manuscript to work on (bring the full manuscript in electronic form—i.e., on your laptops), and will bring hard copies of the first and last ten pages.
