New York Times bestselling author Nikki Grimes is the recipient of the 2017 Wilder Medal, the 2016 Virginia Hamilton Literary Award, and the 2006 NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. Her distinguished works include Garvey’s Choice, ALA Notable book What is Goodbye?, Coretta Scott King Award winner Bronx Masquerade, and Coretta Scott King Author Honor books Jazmin’s Notebook, Talkin’ About Bessie, Dark Sons, Words with Wings, and The Road to Paris. Creator of the popular Meet Danitra Brown, her newest books are:
Between the Lines, a companion novel to Bronx Masquerade.
The Watcher, which was selected as a Picture Book of the Year by World Magazine.
One Last Word, which won the Claudia Lewis Poetry Award, the Arnold Adoff Poetry Award for Middle Readers, and the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award.
To raise awareness about our Artists-in-Residency and their upcoming works, we invite other artists–writers, poets, and illustrators–to join them during their residency. While days will be spent on individual projects, mealtimes will bring all artists together to share farm-fresh food and conversation. After dinner, Nikki will host informal sharing and feedback sessions for all works-in-progress.
We’re excited to learn more about Nikki’s new projects when she joins us in June. Stay tuned for announcements about our other 2018 Artists-in-Residence.
