Treat yourself to an Unworkshop!
Imagine your own private retreat in a picturesque setting – currently just $129/day!
We believe all writers and artists can benefit from the gift of time: time to create and time to dream. That’s why we developed a program called “Unworkshops” that gives you the opportunity to create your own retreat.
In an “Unworkshop,” time is yours to spend as you please. No structure. No schedule. We’ll provide you with comfortable lodging and three great meals a day. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel right at home and fussed over. We’ll furnish a peaceful setting that lets you focus solely on your work.
*New* Special Unworkshop Days
Along with our intense workshops, Artist-in-residency retreats, and self-guided Unworkshops, this year we’re adding a few special Unworkshop days. We’ll pair your self-guided Unworkshop with optional sessions to fill the soul and engage our creative community. We’ll kick off the 2018 season with two opportunities for our Unworshoppers:
March 15 – 18
Join us to celebrate Shadra Strickland’s year-long art exhibit at The Barn. On March 17, we’ll unveil Shadra’s original art from A Child’s Blessings and Prayers with a special reception and book signing. Shadra, like other Unworkshoppers, will be using her time on campus to work on her latest projects as well. Find out more.
March 25 – 28
Children’s book author Laurie Calkhoven uses meditation at every stage of her writing process; from brainstorming story ideas and getting to know her characters to conjuring scenes and revising her work. Join us for an Unworkshop from March 25 – 28 and you can join Laurie for daily meditation exercises to center your mindfulness, breath, and visualization. Find out more.
Stay tuned for more special Unworkshop days throughout 2018!
“I cannot tell you how much the time there meant to me. I have never been that productive without a deadline. There must be some kind of special magic in those cabins…If you need time and space to work, I HIGHLY recommend it.”
Heidi E. Y. Stemple
When we began offering Foundation workshops, we knew we had a unique situation: a campus tucked away in picturesque northeastern Pennsylvania that offers the solitude writers and artists need. So we created Unworkshops. Imagine life away from chores and distractions. Imagine what you could accomplish!
Use the calendar above to see our open Unworkshop dates, but if you have a different date in mind, contact Jo Lloyd to see if that will work. (Email Jo or call toll-free, 1-877-288-3410).
“It was a turning point in my writer’s journey, the moment when I crossed the threshold into that world.”
Here’s what you can expect when you arrive:
“My week at Highlights for an Unworkshop was just what I needed…How terrific to be in such a beautiful place, given delicious food, and everything else I needed so that I could devote all of my attention to my manuscript…It was this writer’s idea of heaven!”
Come for any number of days that fit your needs. Stay for a day or a week, as long as you need to create. See what works for you.
Our Unworkshops program has been growing in popularity. We’ve been gratified to see that so many small groups have come here (friends, critique groups, writing partners) as well as individuals, including some of our faculty members. An Unworkshop is an opportunity to give yourself the gift of time.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Our all-inclusive price means we provide transportation from the airport, lodging, all meals, unlimited snacks, and wireless Internet access.
