Georgia Heard

Georgia Heard received her M.F.A. in poetry writing from Columbia University and is a founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project in New York City. She is the author of 19 books including Boom! Bellow! Bleat! Animal Poems for Two Or More Voices and her most recent children’s poetry collection My Thoughts Are Clouds: Poems for Mindfulness. She is the editor of The Woman in This Poem: Women’s Voices in Poetry and co-author (with Rebecca Kai Dotlich) of A Field Guide to the Heart: Poems of Love, Comfort and Hope. Her books have been awarded the CCBC Choice Awards, Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, NCTE Notable Children’s Books and Junior Library Guild Selection. She has given a TEDx talk on Mapping Your Heart and has served on both the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children Committee, and the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award Committee.

Currently, she visits schools in the United States and around the world teaching writing and poetry, and is the author of several books on teaching poetry and writing including Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School (Heinemann, 1998), which was cited by Instructor magazine as one of the 12 Books Every Teacher Should Read.
