Explore the possibilities of becoming an author/illustrator: finding ideas, sketches to story ideas, narrative drawing, pagination, thumbnail sketches and creating a picture book dummy.

This course is divided into 8 sessions:

  • Session 1: Course Overview and Introductions
  • Session 2: Inspiration: How to get ideas and keep them flowing
  • Session 3: Sketches to Story Ideas
  • Session 4: What Makes a Picture Book?
  • Session 5: Polishing the Story
  • Session 6: The Dummy
  • Session 7: Teacher Feedback on Revisions and Plans for Dummy
  • Session 8: Dummy Reviews

In addition, there is an optional Unworkshop weekend, December 3-6, where you can visit our Retreat Center and have unstructured free writing time in addition to an in-person consultation with your instructor. Register here.

What You’ll Learn

During this workshop you will:

  • Find out how to get ideas and keep them flowing.
  • Use story sketches to spark ideas.
  • Examine the elements of a picture book.
  • Discover how to leave room for the illustrator–even if you are the illustrator.
  • How to paginate your story and use thumbnail sketches to create a dummy.

Attend If:

  • You would like to try to create both the text and illustrations for a picture book. This course aims to help you with both ways of storytelling!
  • You have taken other picture book courses with us. You may find this course of special interest if you are an alum of PB&J: Picture Books & All That Jazz; The Ins & Outs of a Picture Book & Its Many Forms; Crafting a Picture Book Dummy; Picture Book Illustration: From Conception to Birth.

Kelly LightAuthor/illustrator Kelly Light will be joining us for the onsite workshop.
Kelly Light lives in New York but grew up down the shore in New Jersey surrounded by giant pink dinosaurs, cotton candy colors, and Skee-Ball sounds. She was schooled on Saturday-morning cartoons and Sunday funny pages. She picked up a pencil, started drawing, and never stopped.

She is the author/Illustrator of the Louise series, including Louise Loves Art and Louise and Andie, The Art of Friendship. She has also illustrated Elvis and the Underdogs and Elvis and the Underdogs: Secrets, Secret Service, and Room Service by Jenny Lee, and The Quirks series by Erin Soderberg.

Kelly is proud to be an International Ambassador of Creativity for The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity! The Center is a non-profit founded by Chuck Jones, the animator, artist and director.
