Her 2019 title Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré was the recipient of the Pura Belpré Author Honor Award, NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor for Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction, and the Arnold Adoff Poetry Award for Early Readers. In 2020, School Library Journal called A Girl Named Rosita: The Story of Rita Moreno: Actor, Singer, Dancer, Trailblazer! “exuberant” and “inspirational” in a starred review. Anika’s newest biography, Phenomenal AOC: The Roots and Rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was released this September to critical praise, with a starred review from Booklist and Kirkus pronouncing it “pure moxie.” In addition to writing, Anika serves as a 2023 mentor for We Need Diverse Books and a madrina for Las Musas Latinx kidlit collective. She is married to bestselling author-illustrator Christopher Denise and lives in Rhode Island in a small coastal cottage filled with many books, one lazy cat, and three not-quite-grown children.
