Bettie Boswell received the 2023 Richard H. Bell Scholarship for Educators and immediately used it for Color, Light, Line & Texture: Art Exploration and Play!

Bettie’s Story

Bettie Boswell has always loved to read and create stories for family and friends. In 2016 she began writing and illustrating stories to share with the world. She is now a published author/illustrator of both children and Christian adult fiction and non-fiction books. Her efforts include contributions to educational works, leveled readers, magazine articles, and devotional and short story anthologies. Bettie has two grown sons, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and a busy minister husband.

Bettie says: “This was a workshop I had always wanted to attend because of Denise Fleming and Ashley Wolff…I was very excited to attend using a scholarship and was very pleased with the instructors and staff. It was a very enjoyable experience. Sara was a wonderful addition to the other instructors. I thoroughly loved the experience.”

She added, “I explored many different art techniques that I otherwise would not have considered working with. (see below for two of them in the next question) Painting on Plexiglass, working with alcohol inks, and making a shadow box were also great activities. “

“I really enjoyed a couple of the art techniques that we explored and hope to use them in future illustrations for children. Painting colorful paintings on black gesso to give a block printing/scratch board effect was very appealing and would be something I might consider for illustrating a book. The little cartoon books will make great promotional materials for books I’ve already published. I also volunteer at a children’s museum and can see using some of the art ideas there.”
