We’re SO Proud of Our Faculty 2019 ALA Youth Media Award Winners!

Jan 28, 2019 | Asian American Voices, Black Voices, Community Good News, Latinx Voices, Native Creatives

We had our annual ALA Youth Media Awards viewing party today, in the Barn, and the actual audience in Seattle could probably hear us cheering! You can find the full list of winners on the ALA’s site, but special congrats go out to our faculty friends who were honored:

John Newbery Medal
Meg Medina: Merci Suárez Changes Gears, Candlewick Press
Meg was one of our 2017 Artists-in-Residence, she’s been on our Summer Camp faculty, and she’s co-leading a 2019 workshop, Nurturing Your Artistic Voice: A Guide for Kidlit Rebels and Risk-takers, September 22-25, 2019.

Randolph Caldecott Medal Honor Books
Juana Martinez-Neal: Alma and How She Got Her Name, Candlewick Press
Grace Lin: A Big Mooncake for Little Star, Little, Brown/Hachette
Two of “ours” received Caldecott Honors! Grace Lin was just here for last year’s Elements of Plot workshop, and you’ll meet Juana at Taking Your Writing & Art to New Places: Published Authors and Illustrators at Work, September 25-19, 2019.

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award
Tiffany D. Jackson: Monday’s Not Coming, Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins
We’re just super-happy for Tiffany, who is joining us for the first time as faculty for this year’s Summer Camp, July 7-12, 2019.

Coretta Scott King Author Honor Books
Lesa Cline-Ransome: Finding Langston, Holiday House
Varian Johnson, The Parker Inheritance, Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic
Kekla Magoon, The Season of Styx Malone, Wendy Lamb Books/Random House
All three of these honor winners have been faculty at past workshops, and Lesa is teaching at this year’s Master Class in Writing Nonfiction for Children & Young Adults, July 13-17, 2019.

Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books
Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie, written by Alice Faye Duncan and published by Calkins Creek, an imprint of Highlights. Calkins Creek Books is headed up by Senior Editor and Highlights Foundation faculty member Carolyn Yoder.

Margaret A. Edwards Award
This year’s Edwards winner–for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults–is M.T. Anderson. We say “Hooray!” and also “Please come back soon!”

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award Honor Books
Gail Jarrow: Spooked!: How a Radio Broadcast and The War of the Worlds Sparked the 1938 Invasion of America, Calkins Creek/Highlights
Traci Sorell: We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga, illustrated by Frané Lessac, Charlesbridge
Spooked is a double win for us since Gail has been on our faculty and once again, Carolyn Yoder’s Calkins Creek. And we’re pleased for Traci, who is co-leading our first Native Creators Summer Retreat, June 27-30.

YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Finalist
Elizabeth Partridge: Boots on the Ground: America’s War in Vietnam, Viking Books for Young Readers
We’re always honored when Elizabeth comes to share her nonfiction expertise with us!

Sydney Taylor Book Award for Young Readers
All-of-a-Kind-Family Hanukkah, by Emily Jenkins, illustrated by Paul Zelinsky, and published by Schwartz & Wade/Random House Children’s Books.
Both Emily and Paul have been here before…now, can we get them to visit together?
