Writing
novels that resonate with teenagers can be extremely rewarding—if
you know what subjects and writing styles appeal to this specialized
audience. Learn the ins and outs of writing young-adult novels
through lectures, hands-on writing sessions, and manuscript
critiques with an expert in the field.
This workshop will help you
- tap your memories to find ideas for young-adult stories;
- develop captivating dialogue;
- create engaging internal monologue;
- identify voice; and
- revise your manuscript and work with an editor.
Preworkshop assignment: Two weeks before the workshop begins,
an outline of a novel plus fifteen manuscript pages are required.
Workshop Fee of $895 includes cozy, individual cabins; all meals (provided by a top-notch chef); airport pickup service, if needed; and an intimate teaching setting in the living room of the Founders of Highlights for Children! |

Wallace
Rich is the author of a number of acclaimed novels for young adults, including Playing Without the Ball, Wrestling Sturbridge, Shots on Goal, Restless, and One Good Punch. His most recent novels are Dishes and Perpetual Check. He has also authored a short-story collection called Losing Is Not an Option and a series of sports novels for middle-grade readers called Winning Season. His columns, profiles, and other features have been published in Highlights, Track and Field News, Runner's World, and other publications. Rich is a former senior editor at Highlights for Children. |

Nancy Hinkel
Nancy has been at Knopf and Crown Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, for thirteen years. In addition to overseeing the imprint’s publishing program and its nine-person staff, she edits approximately eight books a year. Among them are Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Sue Stauffacher’s Nothing but Trouble: The Story of Althea Gibson, Maria Padian’s Brett McCarthy: Work in Progress, as well as the forthcoming Dizzy in Your Eyes: Poems About Love by Pat Mora and Very Lefreak by Rachel Cohn. |
