Ever wish you could be dropped off on an island? No chores,
no cooking, just a restful space to write your heart out?
Well, we do not have an island. And there is not complete
isolation, because in the evening a group of like-minded writers
gather on the screened porch to critique and hear from editors
and authors . . . but that’s optional. If you prefer,
you can stay on your “island” and let your pen
fly. Go for it.
"Room to Create” provides the solitude, the space,
and the ambience. Immerse yourself in your writing with a
retreat format that allows you to devote all day long to developing
and grooming your work. And in the evening, enjoy the support
and guidance of experienced professionals—an editor,
an author, and a publisher. Enjoy camaraderie and inspiration
as you receive feedback on your writing, participate in group
manuscript critiques, and informally discuss the field of
children's publishing.

Barbara Krasner
More than sixty of Barbara’s articles have appeared
in Babaganewz, Calliope, Cobblestone, Footsteps, and Odyssey. In 2005, she served
as one of the judges in the SCBWI Magazine Writing Merit Awards. In January 2006, she received her MFA
in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College. Barbara is a veteran of the Room to Create workshop and has led a Highlights Foundation workshop on magazine article writing. She is currently at work
on a biography and two historical novels for young people. |

Andy Boyles
A
lifelong interest in science led Andy to his position as science
editor at Highlights for Children and Boyds Mills Press.
From dinosaur fossils and rain forests of Madagascar to environments
closer to
home, Andy’s encounters with the natural world and those
who study it are recorded in countless interviews and articles. A member of the National Association
of Science Writers, he has received numerous writing and editing awards. |

Jan Cheripko |
Jan Cheripko
Jan Cheripko is the author of six books,
including Rat, Imitate the Tiger, Voices of the River,
and Get Ready to Play T-Ball. His latest, Brother
Bartholomew and the Apple Grove, and Caesar Rodney,
due to be published in fall, 2004. For the past several years,
he has taught English and philosophy at the Family Foundation
School.
Jan's book awards
include the Pennsylvania Librarians' Carolyn Field Honor Book
Award, the New York Public Library's Best Book for Teens,
the International Reading Association's Children's Choice,
the Joan Fassler Memorial Book Award, the American Booksellers
Best Book, and the International Reading Association’s
Young Adult’s Choice.
Jan has been a featured speaker at the National Council of
Teachers of English, the International Reading Association,
and numerous state and regional education conferences. He
has addressed students, teachers, and parents about writing,
at-risk teens, heroes, and addiction throughout the nation
and abroad. |

Kathleen Hayes |
Kathleen Hayes
Kathleen was recently named editor of Highlights High
Five™—the new early childhood magazine from
Highlights for Children. Formerly with Bank Street College,
Hayes taught four- and five-year-olds in The Bank Street School
for Children; worked as a staff developer in public school
classrooms in Newark, New Jersey, and Albuquerque, New Mexico;
and taught courses in the graduate school and in the college’s
Division of Continuing Education. At Bank Street College,
she also was a member of the Publications and Media Group,
helping Macmillan/McGraw-Hill develop curriculum materials
for Pre-K through second grade. In addition, Hayes is the
author of a best-selling professional book published by Scholastic,
Classroom Routines That Really Work for Pre-K and K. |

Marileta Robinson |
Marileta Robinson
Marileta is a senior editor at Highlights
for Children and Highlights High Five, where she
edits fiction, in addition to writing each month’s installment
of the popular feature "TheTimbertoes." A free-lance
writer before coming to Highlights, Marileta has published
two picture books and several magazine stories. Her background
includes teaching in the Peace Corps and on the Navajo reservation,
as well as instructing for the Institute of Children’s
Literature. She holds a master’s degree in bilingual education
and is a regular speaker at SCBWI conferences around the country. |

Rich Wallace |
Rich Wallace
Rich is the author of
four acclaimed novels for young adults: Playing Without
the Ball,
Wrestling Sturbridge, Shots on Goal, and Restless.
He has also authored a short-story collection
called Losing Is Not an Option, and a series of sports
novels for middle-grade readers called Winning
Season. His columns, profiles, and other features have been
published in Highlights, Track and Field
News, Runner’s World, and other publications. Rich
is a former senior editor at Highlights
for Children. |
