WORKSHOP FOCUS
Discover the excitement of writing high-interest books for
reluctant readers and learn from an author with passion, experience,
and expertise. Drawing on her own teaching experience as well
as the latest findings from the International Reading Association
and leading authorities on literacy, the workshop leader will
introduce participants to popular books that motivate reluctant
readers and share her best-selling techniques for creating
books kids can’t put down.
You'll learn how to
- include adventure, humor, and suspense in your writing;
- create likeable characters reluctant readers can’t
resist;
- make a story something a reluctant reader would choose;
and
- draw a reluctant reader into a story.
This workshop will include
- readings from various reluctant readers,
- writing activities,
- one-on-one reviews,
- group critiques, plus
- time to work alone.
Participants are welcome to submit for critique, in advance,
a piece of writing no more than five pages.
