WORKSHOP FOCUS
What does it take to tell somebody’s story? How can
you bring a person from the past to
life? How can you offer a credible and original portrait of
someone living today? In this
workshop, attendees will learn the art of biography—for
a magazine article or a book. They
will delve deep into research techniques (including interviewing),
learn about the art of
writing and rewriting, and study published biographies—both
adult and children.
The workshop will include equal parts one-on-one reviews,
lecture and discussion, and
critique session. Attendees will bring to the workshop their
assignments—articles or book
chapters—along with outlines, research notes, bibliographies,
and marketing summaries.
They are also asked to provide ahead of time several questions
about writing biography that
they would like answered during the workshop.
This workshop will help you
- develop tools to bring historical characters to life;
- learn research and interview techniques;
- find out how rewriting skills can polish your work; and
- tailor your writing for articles, short stories, and books.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be a writing assignment
and an extensive critique session.
Workshop Fee of $995 includes cozy, individual cabins; all meals (provided by a top-notch chef); airport pickup service, if needed; and an intimate teaching setting in the living room of the Founders of Highlights for Children!
