WORKSHOP FOCUS
By far the largest numbers of submissions received by children’s book publishers are picture-book manuscripts. Unfortunately, most of these stories can never be published. Why not? Because their authors did not understand the rigid requirements this unique art form demands.
Caldecott medalist Eric Rohmann and Boston Globe–Horn Book Award winner Candace Fleming team up to offer advice from both the illustrating and writing side of picture book creation. Your time with them will be spent reading, writing, and appreciating the picture-book form through writing exercises, peer review, drawing, brainstorming, and individual manuscript critique.
You will
- learn the basic structure of the picture book and discover how to make it work for your story;
- discover the critical language of the picture book with special attention to word sounds, rhythm, and other poetic tools that will make your story sing;
- understand how a manuscript must suggest visual scenes and how illustrations enhance the narrative qualities of your manuscript; and
- apply the techniques for seamlessly integrating your story’s words and pictures.
Each participant will be encouraged to create a dummy from his or her manuscript, which will then be critiqued by the instructors.
Workshop Fee of $1050 includes cozy, individual cabins; all meals (provided by a top-notch chef); airport pickup service, if needed; and an intimate teaching setting in the living room of the Founders of Highlights for Children!
