Arrive Thursday, September 17, at 3 P.M. for a tour of HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN® and Boyds Mills Press.
Depart Sunday, September 20, after lunch.

Designed For: Illustrators new to the field of children’s publishing.

If you’re an illustrator just entering children’s publishing, this workshop is for you! Author/illustrator Neil Waldman will teach you everything you need to know to increase your chances of landing a coveted book illustration contract.

This workshop will help you

  • understand the unique requirements of illustrating for children;
  • develop a compelling and original portfolio;
  • market yourself and gain access to art directors;
  • effectively communicate with art directors on projects; and
  • learn to create illustrations that enhance a story.

NOTE: Participants should bring a portfolio, or at least some samples of their work, and their two favorite picture books.

Workshop Fee of $995 includes cozy, individual cabins; all meals (provided by a top-notch chef); airport pickup service, if needed; and an intimate teaching setting in the living room of the Founders of Highlights for Children!

Neil Waldman

Neil Waldman
Neil Waldman has illustrated more than fifty books, many of them award winners. His accolades include the Washington Irving Award, the Parents Choice Award, the Christopher Award, and the National Jewish Book Award. His illustrations and designs have graced the covers of seven Newbery winners, including Hatchet, Dogsong, The Winter Room, and A Fine White Dust. His recent memoir, Out of the Shadows: An Artist’s Journey, was published in 2006 by Boyds Mills Press. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Neil is currently an art instructor for the State University of New York and the Westchester Art Workshop.
