Arrive Thursday, September 15, at 3 P.M. for a tour of HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN® and Boyds Mills Press.
Depart Sunday, September 18, after lunch.

Designed For: Illustrators new to the field of children’s publishing.

If you’re an illustrator just entering children’s publishing, this workshop is for you! Author/illustrator Neil Waldman will teach you everything you need to know to increase your chances of landing a coveted book illustration contract.

This workshop will help you

  • understand the unique requirements of illustrating for children;
  • develop a compelling and original portfolio;
  • market yourself and gain access to art directors;
  • effectively communicate with art directors on projects; and
  • learn to create illustrations that enhance a story.

NOTE: Participants should bring a portfolio, or at least some samples of their work, and their two favorite picture books.

Neil Waldman

Neil Waldman
Neil Waldman has illustrated nearly fifty books, many of them award winners. His accolades include the Washington Irving Award, the Parents Choice Award, the Christopher Award, and the National Jewish Book Award. His illustrations and designs have graced the covers of a number of Newbery winners, including Hatchet, The Winter Room, and A Fine White Dust. One of his more recent books, The Promised Land, was published in 2002 by Boyds Mills Press. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, he is currently an art instructor for the State University of New York and the Westchester Art Workshop.
