WORKSHOP FOCUS
Through the critical analysis of award-winning and other exemplary picture books, this course will further investigate the skills and knowledge necessary to refine and hone your craft as a picture-book creator.
As an in-depth and advanced study of the genre, participants will delve deeply into the following topics:
- dynamic word/image relationships,
- individual voice and style as defined through technique and media,
- illustrative skills,
- compositional strategies and design in image,
- page and spread,
- how historical and cultural trends impact the form,
- and the contemporary picture-book market.

Dominic Catalano
Dominic holds an MA in fine arts,
an MFA in illustration, and most recently was awarded a PhD
in art
education from Ohio State University. He is an assistant professor
at Bowling Green State University in
northwestern Ohio. Dominic has illustrated twenty-five trade
and mass-market picture books, four of
which he also wrote—Wolf Plays Alone, Frog Went
A-Courting, Santa and the Three Bears, and
Mr. Basset Plays. His work has also appeared in numerous
children’s magazines and reading series.
