WORKSHOP FOCUS
Through the critical analysis of award-winning and other exemplary picture books, this course will further investigate the skills and knowledge necessary to refine and hone your craft as a picture-book creator.

As an in-depth and advanced study of the genre, participants will delve deeply into the following topics:

  • dynamic word/image relationships,
  • individual voice and style as defined through technique and media,
  • illustrative skills,
  • compositional strategies and design in image,
  • page and spread,
  • how historical and cultural trends impact the form,
  • and the contemporary picture-book market.

Join illustrator and author Dominic Catalano for this thought-provoking and challenging workshop dedicated to the fine art of the picture book.

Workshop Fee of $995 includes cozy, individual cabins; all meals (provided by a top-notch chef); airport pickup service, if needed; and an intimate teaching setting in the living room of the Founders of Highlights for Children!

  Workshop Leader

Dominic Catalano
Dominic holds an MA in fine arts, an MFA in illustration, and most recently was awarded a PhD in art
education from Ohio State University. He is an assistant professor at Bowling Green State University in
northwestern Ohio. Dominic has illustrated twenty-five trade and mass-market picture books, four of
which he also wrote—Wolf Plays Alone, Frog Went A-Courting, Santa and the Three Bears, and
Mr. Basset Plays
. His work has also appeared in numerous children’s magazines and reading series.
