Georgia Heard

Georgia Heard received her M.F.A. in poetry writing from Columbia University. She is a founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project in New York City. Currently, she visits schools in the United States and around the world teaching writing and poetry, and is the author of several books on teaching poetry including Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School (Heinemann, 1998), which was cited by Instructor magazine as one of the 12 Books Every Teacher Should Read.

She is also the author and editor of numerous children’s books including: Falling Down the Page: A Book of List Poems (Roaring Brook Press, 2009), This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort (Candlewick Press, 2006), Creatures of Earth, Sea and Sky: Poems About Animals (Boyds Mills Press, 1999), Songs of Myself: An Anthology of Poems and Art (Mondo, 2001) and forthcoming Hiss, Gibber, Grunt: Multi-Voiced Animal Poems. Her work has been anthologized in dozens of anthologies, and she is the editor of a new anthology The Woman in This Poem: Women’s Voices in Poetry. She has served on both the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children Committee, and the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award Committee.
